Internet Download Manager

Don't let the dull name fool you: Internet Download Manager is a full-featured package that handles downloading tasks with aplomb. It conveniently integrates into your browser, even if you use Mozilla or Opera.

It automatically sorts incoming files by file type and puts them in the appropriate folder. Most importantly, it supercharges download speeds (it doubled ours). Its windowed interface is clean and easy to understand. Power users can take advantage of the command line interface to resume file transfers, schedule downloads, connect through dial-up, or log on to password-protected sites. Experienced users also can limit the number of connections, the download speeds for specific sites, and even create an exception list to block specific, user-defined sites.

Other features include automatic virus checking and the ability to download all files linked to a page. The new version has a Web spider that can analyze a site and retrieve, for example, all the images on it.

Internet Download Manager strikes us as a natural choice for users in need of a trusty transfer tool. Version 5.11 build 5 added FLV grabber that can be used to download videos from YouTube, Google Video, MySpaceTV, and other popular sites.

Microsoft Office 2010

Microsoft Office 2010 is available today for business licenses, with the public release coming in June, but we've had a chance to put the review copy through its paces. According to Microsoft, the focus of this major overhaul was on three things: to make work flow more efficient; to effectively use Web applications to make your work available anywhere; and to make collaboration with others much easier. In our review of Microsoft Office 2010, we look at the notable feature changes across many of the applications. Microsoft says Office 2010 will let you use your PC, smartphone, and the Web to make your projects come together more efficiently. From what we've seen, the company might be right, but it will need to work out some of the bugs before the launch in June.

Avira 10

Avira's AntiVir has been a player in the security world for some time; however, in 2008 its status boomed because of its remarkably strong detection rates. It still remains near the top of independent antivirus efficacy tests, but while the 2009 version more or less kept pace with the competition, the 2010 edition isn't quite as good as it could be.

Both longtime and new users alike will note the pop-up ad that appears whenever a program update is downloading; it has been the unaddressed focus of critical and user dislike for several years. While the occasional ad that interferes with a user's work flow used to be considered tolerable for effective free security, that's no longer the case. Avira's lack of a silent-running entertainment-gaming mode is also noticeable, since so many free and paid competitors now offer the mode.

Except for the most cosmetic of changes, the app's interface is unchanged from version 8. There are new icons on the program's toolbar, a new static image background, and that's about it. The main window offers a left-side navigation menu with drop-down menus and a central pane to see more detailed information. AntiVir opens to the Status menu, informing you of your last scan, your last definition file update, whether the real-time guard is active; however, Avira removed the premium upgrade link in this version. The Events screen logs changes to the program and the Reports tab keeps a history of threats--information from both sections can be exported.

New features are a bit thin in the free version of Avira 10, too. A new generic-repair mode really just takes the choice out of how Avira tells you about the threats it has discovered. In version 9, you could be informed about them in the middle of a scan or at the end; however, now only the latter is available. Windows 7 users now have the capability to run a scan as an administrator directly from the interface, which is a smart, but minor improvement. Avira's installation sequence has been revamped, and now only takes users through five windows. Theoretically, this means it's a five-click installation, but new users will have to complete the registration form. However, its installation file unpacking process appears faster, and you no longer have to reboot after the install.

This isn't to say that AntiVir Free 10 isn't stuffed with robust features. The program offers a wide selection of scan customization, letting users fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan--for rootkits, for example--or customize a scan. On a real-world computer, the full scan took about 1 hour and 12 minutes, which is average. Avira includes antispyware protections, scanning tech that can crack open "locked" files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir's files from being maliciously altered, and one-click threat removal--baby-sitting was taken out in the last version.

The Local Protection and Administration navigation options reveal the Scanner, Guard, Quarantine, and Scheduler features. Combined with the Configuration button located at the top of the central pane, users can customize scans as necessary. When Avira quarantines a file, its information is on display along with options to scan it again, restore, delete, and e-mail the file to Avira. The apps rebuilt heuristic engine retains the same choices from the previous version had, and it can be turned on or off in part or in full and offers three intensity levels. Not counting the lively user forums, Avira's included help features are good for a free antivirus app, with mouse-over information on each feature. The scheduler, once a major Avira selling point because it was light-years ahead of other free security suites, has now been caught up to by its competitors.

AntiVir 10 doesn't require a special uninstallation tool, unlike many competitors do. In the end, Avira's free suite makes for an excellent backup suite, but its competitors have since caught up with or surpassed what it can do.

PC Software

Adobe Photoshop Elements 7

Adobe obviously pays attention to what's hot these days. And online photo sharing is more popular than ever, with sites like Flickr and Facebook and programs like Apple iPhoto keeping people connected through photos, blogs, and blurbs. With Photoshop Elements 7 ($100, or $150 when bundled with Premiere Elements 7 video-editing software; in private beta, due in October), Adobe provides ties to its new online service, Photoshop.com, and adds enough fresh features to the desktop app itself to make version 7 a worthy upgrade.

The big news here involves the Photoshop.com service, which incorporates Adobe's Photoshop Express online editing service and offers two levels of membership: a free, 2GB Basic membership; and a $50 per year Plus membership. The free membership provides 5GB of storage and automatic backup of your images to Photoshop.com's servers. You can also access your account and online galleries from any Web browser. When you edit your pictures, the changes you make will be synced up with your home PC-and similarly, changes you make on local photo files will be uploaded and synced to your Photoshop.com storage. Adobe is also working on a mobile uploader that will let you post photos from your cell phone. With the Plus membership, you get 20GB of storage, as well as the option to have Adobe send you design advice, new tutorials, tips, seasonal artwork, and templates as these are developed throughout the year.

Even though the Photoshop Elements 7 software that I tested was still in beta form, I found much to like. New to version 7 of Adobe Photoshop Elements is a Smart Brush tool borrowed from Photoshop, as well as a handy Scene Cleaner that has been added to the Photomerge tool. Disgruntled users of Photoshop Elements past will be pleased to learn that this version lets users adjust the background tint from charcoal all the way to stark white. More good news: Photoshop Elements 7 has FTP settings, so you can upload galleries directly to your own Web site.

Unfortunately, Elements 7 still lacks the Fade slider tool available in Photoshop that lets you adjust the intensity of a filter immediately after applying it, so you can get exactly the look you want. Considering its many impressive creative filter options, Elements 7 would benefit from such a tool.

The application continues to straddle the line between novices and more seasoned users, offering three levels of editing: Full Edit, Quick Fix, and Guided Editing. You can switch between the levels by clicking on tabs, and after a while I became familiar with which options are available at each level. Still, the three-level structure feels a bit clunky at times, especially when you're forced to blunder through a combination of menu options and tabbed screens to find more-advanced options such as editing color curves.

Full Edit provides essential controls similar to those in the full-fledged Photoshop, with advanced editing tools, filters, and layers. Quick Fix offers sliders for common tasks such as brightness, saturation, sharpening, color balance, and red-eye reduction. A "touch-up" panel makes Smart Brushes available, including a toothbrush for whitening teeth, a brush for saturating dull skies, and a high-contrast black-and-white tool for applying effects to selected areas in your photo. As in Photoshop, you can customize the brush's size, hardness, and spacing. The program's selections were impressively accurate at whitening teeth; and you can also use the "add" or "subtract" tool or adjust feathering to refine your selection.

If you're new to image editing and not up for all of this complicated stuff, Elements 7's Guided Editing is for you. In this panel you'll find text-based guidelines that you can select from a list. Guided Editing shows you how to adjust specific image properties such as contrast; or it can walk you through the process of antiquing a photo, showing you various effects. Guided Editing can be a useful educational tool for people new to image editing and for more-seasoned photographers who are learning to use the program. It's also fun to play with.

Photoshop Elements' Photomerge capabilities are a boon to anyone who's ever taken a snapshot. With its new Scene Cleaner, the program does an excellent job of removing unwanted interlopers in a photo of your brother in front of the "Rocky" statue. As it could in Elements 6, Photomerge can fuse subjects from several photos into one, creating a scene where everyone is looking at the camera, eyes open. Such compositing used to take hours, but now you can do it in just a few seconds.

For anyone seeking a combination image editor and organizer that doesn't break the bank, Photoshop Elements 7 is a powerful contender. The program's new online components permit you to do more from within a familiar interface, and its new tools alone make it worth the upgrade.Adobe obviously pays attention to what's hot these days. IDPhotos 2008

IdPhotos 2008 bills itself as an easy way for users to create photos appropriate for a variety of identification types. Although the program has potential, it wasn't as easy to use as we had hoped it would be.

The program's interface is sleek, and at first glance it seemed like it would be fairly intuitive. Users first select the type of document for which they need a photo; specifications for documents from 31 countries are listed, including those for passports, visas, and other types of ID. Each document type notes, for example, what color the background should be, whether the ears must be exposed, and so on. Next, users select the photo they want to use, and the program walks users through the process of centering and cropping the image. This seemed like it was going to be an easy process until we ran into a big error message reading "A part of the crop is out of the image." What did this mean? We consulted the Help file, an online PDF, but it's written in such poor English that it's practically meaningless. We tried the program with two other photos and finally got it to work with the third one, although we're still not sure why that photo worked and the other two didn't. We did like that the program gives users a variety of formats in which they can print images, and overall we felt like the program had the potential to be very useful, if only it provided clearer instructions for its users.

IdPhotos 2008 is free. It installs desktop icons without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program with reservations.

Arcadia PhotoPerfect 2.92

PhotoPerfect claims it is a digital photo editor's dream come true. With a plethora of options and tools to dial in your pictures, this is certainly an impressive weapon. However, its features might overwhelm novices.

This program presents itself much like other photo editing software. Anyone who has tinkered with Photoshop or comparable programs will recognize the layout of command buttons along the top and left side of the picture. Where PhotoPerfect differs from the others is that it offers fewer opportunities to physically alter the photo. It does, however, offer plenty of innovative ways to tweak a shot to get it perfect. Many of the tools available to users include traditional masks, filters, color adjustments, and the like. PhotoPerfect also offers a histogram, options for white balancing, color balancing, color saturation, distortion, and more. The most impressive was Perfectly Clear, a filter that quickly and easily adjusts vibrancy, sharpness, exposure limit, and contrast for studio-quality shots.

We were pleased with this 14-day trial's options and the ease with which they could be adjusted, since most popped up in separate screens and had sliding bars to make changes. This program will be a gem for users who do a lot of professional photo manipulation, but the options and what they specifically do to help pictures will be over the heads of many novice users. We recommend this download only for those with a serious composition background.

Photoshop CS4

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 and earlier for Windows and Macintosh that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits these vulnerabilities to take control of the affected system. A malicious .ASL, .ABR, or .GRD file must be opened in Photoshop CS4 by the user for an attacker to be able to exploit these vulnerabilities. Adobe recommends Photoshop CS4 customers update to Photoshop CS4 11.0.2, which resolves these issues. The Photoshop 11.0.2 update also addresses a number of problems with brushes, styles and gradient preset files discovered after Photoshop CS4 was released.

Music Player

The KMPlayer

Despite lacking a Help file, KMPlayer is one of the most powerful freeware video players we've seen. It includes a vast array of video- and audio-capturing options, as well as skins, a plethora of playback controls and tweaks, and broad DVD support.

You'll have to learn the ropes yourself, perhaps a hindrance to newcomers. But if you're familiar with where things ought to be in programs, and willing to patiently wait for mouse-over labels to pop up and then click on them for the actual menus, KMPlayer has the potential to be immensely rewarding. It supports all major file formats, and all of the minor and obscure ones we tested. It did have problems with the RealPlayer 11's video capture IVR format, but not much else.

Advanced options include frame capture and a frame-forward feature, which is actually a fractional Play button, but the difference is negligible. The Pause button is a fast responder, too. Combined with streaming TV and HDTV compatibility, playlists, and the ability to select which codec is used on a video-by-video basis, and you get a media player that demands attention

Virtual DJ 6.0.1

With effects, samples, and transitions that rival vinyl turntablisms, Virtual DJ lets anyone produce polished MP3 mixes.

At the top of the graphically-intense interface, song-structure visualizations show the beats as the music plays. Two simulated turntables play the currently- loaded tracks. Windows below the turntables show samples, effects, music search, recording, program options, and an Explorer-style interface for loading music. You'll need to download an MP3 encoder if you don't want to record files in WAV format.

Virtual DJ not only can create audio collages, but it now also can make montages of video clips. The stylish interface and high number of features score points, but learning how to use the program is a hit-or-miss proposition. Fortunately, the program offers a thorough user guide. Virtual DJ is well worth a look both for aspiring mixers and newbies. Download

Zoom Player

Zoom Player is a very fast media player. Prior to Zoom Player, playing media files on the PC was either overly simplistic for the Power User or overly cryptic to the common user. Zoom Player tries to both simplify the playback experience for the common user, while giving the Power Users all the tools and interfaces they may require to manipulate their playback environment to their exact specification.

To that end, Zoom Player employs a slick and simple user interface, combined with easy to access features while at the same time providing advanced control dialogs over every feature imaginable.

Zoom Player was designed from the ground up to load quick, take as little system resources as possible, provide user feedback/direction as appropriate and maintain as much isolation from other applications and system components as not to undermine overall stability. Download

Windows Media Player

The de facto standard for Windows media playback is Windows Media Player. This version--11--is getting up in age and is best used for older systems. The interface is familiar with a simple menu of commands, a central playback window, and an information bar. Standard audio playback functions are easy to access. The graphic equalizer features 22 preset options, and the usual slider bar will be familiar to 1970s rock fans. The large varieties of visualizations are easy to implement and are sure to amuse those who remember the 1960s. Video playback in any of the included skins is adequate. Controls, for the most part, are easy to access, though some skins stretch the concept of user-friendly. Copying to and copying from CDs works, but don't expect most options available from current players. The Internet radio player searches station listings by genre or location. Despite the lack of newer features, users with older systems or those who favor familiar controls will find that the free Windows Media Player 9 fits like an old, sequined glove. Download

Kaspersky Anti-Hacker

Kaspersky Anti-Hacker

Kaspersky Anti-Hacker - The personal firewall, which provides full-scale protection for PC, running Windows.

Kaspersky Anti-Hacker is a personal firewall application, that will provide full-scale protection for PC, running Windows, from all the attempts of non-authorized access to data, as well as from the hacker attacks both from Internet and Intranet. Kaspersk Anti-Hacker provides control over the computer activity on the base of two-level analysis of system network activity. Tracking activity of Internet-connected applications (high -level operations). Integrated analysis of activity of such Internet- connected applications like Web-browsers, mail applications, file transfer application, etc. Packet filtration of incoming and outgoing data (low-level operations). At this level Kaspersky Anti-Hacker analyses directly the packets, sent or received by computer. Filtration rules setting. According to the user tasks software allows for creation or changing any set of rules for the tracking of applications activity as well as for packet filtration. Ability to set up special security rules for the internet-connected applications can be represented in Internet access to be allowed or denied for the particular application depending on its type - mail client, internet-pager, web-browser, etc., or to allow specific type for activity for each concrete application (i.e. to set remote services and addresses with whose the application can interact). On setting packet filtration rules, it's possible to allow or to deny transferring data of specific types. The decision on the following actions with the packet is taken on the base of analysis of the information stored in the packet header: sender or recipient's IP-address, data transfer protocol to be used, etc. This type of rules can be applied to all applications. Packet filtration also provides effective protection against hacker attacks. Customized security levels depending on your tasks, Kaspersky? Anti-Hacker allows for making choice among the five security levels starting with complete protection turn-off up to total block of all Internet connections, for each of whose levels you can specify security and packet filtration rules. Efficient protection against known types of hacker attacks
Kaspersky? Anti-Hacker partly functions in automatic mode. Attack Detector provides reliable defense against such known types of hacker attacks like port scanning, ping, etc.
